We pushed hard to make sure Evanna's wheelchair was ordered with a freewheel accessory included. We asked three of her providers to write letters of medical necessity, providing benefits and an explanation of our family culture to help them provide back up for their request to insurance. Today, we saw the benefits of that effort.
It was a snow day...our first of the year. Naturally, we wanted to go out and play. Snow-covered grassy fields aren't wheelchair accessible...or are they?
They are if you have a freewheel attachment. Not only that, but pushing a wheelchair through the snow is relatively easy.
We watched some kids sledding down a very short slope and visited with an extremely happy lab who ran full speed through the snow.
We played with the "ADA accessible play components" at the playground.
I took her for a ride down the little hill and then pulled her and Josh a short distance on the field. He's heavy so that didn't last long.
When we were sufficiently frozen (it was 28 degrees and breezy), we headed home for hot chocolate, which Evanna thought was the best thing she's ever tasted.
